Reductionist theory states that if we can find the constituant parts of any system, we can know that system empiricaly, and axiomize it's function as a natural "law." Of course, the more science learns, the less they know and the more rediculous reductionist thought becomes.
As Terrance McKenna put it, the larger the fire we build, the more darkness is revealed. This is extremely paradoxical to modern scientific thought.
Simply put, we are never going to have a Unified Field theory that works, because for every law, there is an exception and there are many phenomena we will never understand simply because of an inherent lack of ability in the human mind. We can not conceptualize the way the universe works, and the sooner we realize this the sooner we can concentrate our energy on something that actually matters.
